CNN, a.k.a. “That Irritating Noise You Hear At the Airport,” courageously and without regard for cost or danger, mustered all its considerable resources to finally getting to the bottom of that Russia story tracking down some guy on Reddit whose gif made fun of them.
I appreciate Instapundit’s take, but I have zero time for anonymous anybody on the web.
I don’t quote anonymous bloggers anymore, no matter how articulate.
Anonymity will be the death of us.
I’m often told that anonymity is acceptable because great writers in dangerous times were anonymous.
This arrogantly presumes that “SHITLORD3000” with his Crusader avatar is the next Tom Paine, and this is 99% of the time NOT the case.
When caught, olden days anonymous pamphleteers didn’t start screaming things like:
I would also like to apologize for the posts made that were racist, bigoted, and anti-semitic. I am in no way this kind of person, I love and accept people of all walks of life and have done so for my entire life. I am not the person that the media portrays me to be in real life, I was trolling and posting things to get a reaction from the subs on reddit and never meant any of the hateful things I said in those posts.
It actually goes on longer!
And dig CNN’s noble reaction:
CNN is not publishing “HanA**holeSolo’s” name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.
CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.
If you didn’t shudder when you read those words, there is something seriously wrong with you.
Word for word, that story is the most nauseating thing I’ve read in months.
I’ll say it again:
“Our lives, our fortunes, our sacred honor.”
I don’t want to hear about your job and your kids.
Life is about making trade offs.
If you want to play this game, you have to be like me and put your face and name out there, or you just have to shut the f*** up.
I really love Stefan, but we shouldn’t valourize this Reddit troll either:
