Here in Canada, Sharknado aired last night on Space.
Normally, folks at The Asylum and other “mockbuster” studios put out better quality product, but Sharknado was technically poor.
The opening beach sequence looked like it was shot on three different beaches on 17 different days. Intern (possibly someone’s nephew?) in “post”?
Couldn’t hear some of the dialogue. Literally couldn’t see what was going on at points.
Cuts were so rapid, you kept wondering, “What just happened?”
(And I loathe those “What just happened?” people, never mind being one.)
Everyone was acting their hearts out, and even the script wasn’t horrible. The sharks were sharks.
But from a basic visual/audio How To Shoot A Movie 101 standpoint, except for the sharks themselves? Awful.
After all the social media hype, the ratings were just average.
Snakes on a Plane phenomenon repeated.
Although some argue that ratings no longer matter and/or have to be contextualized.
For a lot of SyFy fans, this will be the “my music just went mainstream” moment — “Is Your Teen a Punk Rocker? Here Are the Signs” — when their “thing” (SyFy’s modern day B-movies) got discovered by their grandma and therefore got “ruined.”
If you were all excited about Sharknado and are now squirming in dissatisfaction, you really need to download (non-The Asylum produced) Jersey Shore Shark Attack to restore your equilibrium.
Watching that, I sat there smiling for two hours.
