‘What Women’s Media Needs To Know About Chassidic Women’

Over 1000 comments already…

Hi. I’m Chaya, and I am a Chassidic Jewish woman. I am also a media professional with a degree in Women’s Studies from a large, very liberal university (magna cum laude, baby!). (…)

Look at it this way:

When your friends go to India to learn how to meditate and come home “leading spiritual lives” and suddenly won’t go out for barbecue with you, you think it is cool. Your friend is leading a spiritual life. Spiritual lives involve boundaries and not just doing whatever your body feels like at that second. We lead spiritual lives. Leading a spiritual life is rewarding. (…)

A few beefs:

The faces of all the other women in the pic that accompanies the article are all blurred out, which I understand but is still a bit ehngh.

And she doesn’t know what the phrase “original sin” means. It is a stupid-liberal-cliche that it is synonymous with sex.

It’s actually about thinking you’re smarter than God, which, er, cough, sorry…

(I hope she’ll stay away from mixing up “immaculate conception” with “virgin birth” too, then, if it ever comes up. Thank you.)

And the idea that porn-riddled America is “Puritan” is also an unexamined, stupid-liberal-cliche, squared —  because Puritans were not that uptight.

So, to get a little New Testy-menty on ya:

Mote. Eye. Rinse. Repeat.

PS: further proof that magnum cum laude from a “large, very liberal university” still pretty much means what I always thought it did:

“I believe lots of stuff that modern scholarship, and the evidence of my own senses, disproves — AND I still think I’m smarter than you!”
