When the Ted Williams/Wino with the Golden Voice story got big, I posted this insider/industry tidbit called:
By coincidence, at the same time I was reading Adam Carolla’s book (which you should probably listen to rather than read) and he was remembering all the rules he broke when he first went on the radio (free audio): “Keep mentioning our call letters!” “Give out the phone number!!”‘ “Tell them the time!!!”
He wasn’t a trained, professional broadcaster. He just knew those “rules” were boring and stupid:
More “cooch talk”, more “Cocktober”, more “Manuary”, more of that stuff. His suggestions, other than the Wing Bowl, were like, “How about you give out the time?” And I was always like, “Jack, don’t you listen to the fucking show? All I do is make fun of the other idiots who give out the time.” It’s, ironically, a waste of time. See, radio’s about spinning wheels and wasting time. It’s about guys with subpar intellects killing four goddamn hours a morning. How do you kill four hours? I don’t want to kill four hours! I’d like to connect for four hours.
One day, he’d had enough. He decided to follow all the rules, all at once, and make his PD”s dream come true by sounding just like all the other morning show guys:
The lesson here is that some men are meant to be their own boss…
