‘Shaun of the Dead’ + ‘It Happened Here’ = ‘Dead Snow’ (2009)

January 15, 2011 By Kathy Shaidle

I am so zombied out. But I felt guilty because we bought a pre-watched copy of Dead Snowdead snow * at a deep discount and still hadn’t watched it.

So we finally played it last night. I liked it more than Arnie did. Amazingly, he didn’t once find fault with the Nazi uniform insignia and so on, so they must’ve been pretty accurate. (Usually I have to hear “That’s the wrong kind of tank” and so on…)

I’m sure there were some Norwegian pop culture/history comments we didn’t get, but the movie was still entertaining if you liked Shaun of the Dead, and appreciate “Evil Dead — 1 vs 2“ “prep montage” references.

(Come to think of it, Dead Snow is like a cross between Shaun of the Dead and It Happened Hereit happened here…)

For some reason, there was a fixation on intestines that, for all I know, is some Norwegian thing, the way the Japanese are into ghosts. Very gory, of course; I had to turn away a lot.

A nice looking film, with great scenery. Even the Norwegian rock music wasn’t that awful. I can imagine buying the soundtrack.

More about Dead Snow here and here.

* (Not to be confused with Zombie Lake [1980] or Shock Waves (1977)
