‘The King of Comedy’ (1982)

Fascinated as I am by the mechanics of celebrity and obsessive fandom, it’s no surprise this is one of the films I most admire.

De Niro is the last actor any normal director would’ve cast in this nebbish loser part, but this is Scorsese, and somehow, it works.

I certainly “got it” in ’82 and can’t quite fathom how one couldn’t, but then, well, most people are stupid.
