Steve Allen did say one funny thing

In light of this post, a reader writes:

… but only one time. (…)

it was the beginning of the civil rights movement in the U.S. and white folks we’re edgy as to where all those protests would lead. The media was always walking on eggshells wondering what to call blacks that week … Walter Cronkite and the lesser network news liars started the civil rights era by calling them “Coloured people” … which deferentially morphed into the more proper “Negroes” … and later, black power forced the networks to call them “blacks” … which has since morphed into “African-Americans”.

Anyway ……..

In that nervous and racially charged environment, his guest (white comedian Buddy Hackett) and Steve Allen (on LIVE network television) somehow started talking about whatever civil rights issue / march / protest had been in the news that day …  and Steve Allen on LIVE television looked sincerely into the camera to lead us into  the next commercial break with this line:

“You know … if the Negroes and the coloured people and the blacks could ever ALL start working TOGETHER, they might eventually accomplish something…”

OK … back to your regularly scheduled blogging … keep up the fearlessly fiesty work!
