Her column is one of the best I’ve read on the so-called “health care crisis” in the U.S., making the necessary but largely ignored (because it’s unpopular) point that much of the “problem” consists of ordinary citizens with unrealistic expectations and chronic senses of entitlement.
Americans: you “can’t afford health insurance” (and a lot of you can but would rather buy Playstations…) is because the government made it expensive, not the free market.
And it would help if you didn’t sue everybody every five minutes. Two words: tort reform. (See: “Why John Edwards Is Responsible for More Unnecessary Operations Than ‘Greedy’ Doctors”)
Plus: her column’s title couldn’t be more accurate, even if it doesn’t really match her piece.
My mother’s cancer was late Stage 3 before they suddenly decided it wasn’t chronic constipation after all.
And my lupus wasn’t treated with anything more than a “live with it” shrug until I weighed 89lbs, could barely walk, was in constant pain from myositits, had to be hospitalized for a week and was later told by my doctor, “We almost lost ya there.”
Oh, and my grandfather’s shingles? Just “sunburn”! Like all honest Canadians, I’ve got a million of ’em.
My experience of being treated like a queen before, during and after Lasik sold me on private medicine. Yep, I’m still paying for it, on my 18% interest credit card. And yep, I can still see and don’t need glasses anymore. You see, hopelessly entitled Canadians: you have to PAY for stuff that works and cost millions of bucks for somebody smarter than you to invent, and somebody smarter than you to go to school to learn to do!
If it helps, think of this payment as the inventor’s and the doctor’s “human right” to receive.
