“He seemed broken hearted…” Tom Petty’s best song wasn’t a Tom Petty song

October 3, 2017 By Kathy Shaidle

I’ve never been a fan.

I always resented either his or his record company’s marketing of him as a “New Wave” singer/songwriter in the Elvis Costello mould, although I understand that at his (relatively advanced) age, they were all eager for him to finally break through after years of thankless slogging. And every label wanted a Costello back then.

I just never warmed up to the guy, although maybe I will now since I expect we’ll be semi-soaking in it for a few days, and I’ll be forced to give his music my attention whether I want to or not.

But I’m grateful for this at least:

Of course, this whole story is pretty layered.

So with the slow graceful flow of age, sometimes I regret having had a boring life.

Sometimes not.
