5 Feet of Fury

Never mind the bollards, says Mark Steyn

Mark Steyn (who I seem to recall actually saw the Sex Pistols once, dammit) writes:

Why do people like that Birmingham tourist think the answer to more and more Muslims is more and more bollards?

I don’t think I type the word “bollard” more than once a decade.  (…)

Nevertheless, a few days ago, in Melbourne, another maniac, self-described as a “Greek Islamic Kurdish Angel of Cult” for whatever that’s worth, used his vehicle to mow down another bunch of pedestrians, three fatally. Is the Melbourne motorist really an “Islamic Kurd”? Or just a nut riffing on the fashions of the day? Either way, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull immediately called for more bollards:

‘A vulnerability we need to address’: Malcolm Turnbull calls for more bollards in busy pedestrian areas

Steyn also helpfully if inadvertently illustrates a nasty point I was going to leave to my next Taki’s column — not that I haven’t touched on it before.

I’m currently reading Kliph Nesterhoff‘s The Comedians and while the opening chapters needed a copy editor’s once-over, otherwise it is quite hard to put down.

(I really do need to learn more about this Fred Allen fellow, whose name has always been familiar to me, but nothing more. When a candy company sponsored his radio show, his “live read” type commercial was, “Children who eat too much chocolate will get sick and die.” Another sponsor was a razor company, so: “XYZ Razors. They’re educational. Just try them. You’ll learn…”)

Unfortunately I find myself in the unavoidable 1960s/druggie chapter, and like some kind of “angel (dust) of the libraries,” the phrase “Owsley acid” has been popping up in my reading all week.

In this chapter, Cheech & Chong are on the verge of forming, and that, along with Mary Tyler Moore’s death, prompted me to recall my snobbish observation here. That is:

These are two pot heads:

Whereas (h/t Steyn) these are two alcoholics:
