Stop being smug about terrorism, Canada, says… Chris Selley?!

Chris Selley writes:

It’s easy to sit here in Toronto and say it’s illogical for Europeans to lose sleep about terrorism, as they’re more likely to die in a car accident; or to insist, correctly, that the vast majority of refugees pose no threat. Canadian voices have often criticized European countries for their less-than-entirely welcoming policies. It makes my toes curl; I often wonder how other countries put up with us when we’re playing armchair general.

It’s not that Canadians shouldn’t be proud of Canadian society. They certainly should. But if I could enforce a new year’s resolution on this country, it would be to be mindful of and thankful for what dumb luck has bestowed upon us, and to dial down the smugness a long, long way.
