My NEW Taki’s column: From Scopes to Snopes

Once again, I can’t predict the “JOOOOO!!!!!”-yness of the comments this week…

Now, this particular “evidence” is especially fascinating because it accidentally echoes a talking point that pops up in almost every glowing profile of the supposedly stringently objective Mikkelsons: David insists he’s “apolitical,” his voter registration reportedly shows no party affiliation, and hey, Barbara is a Canadian citizen anyhow. So there.

Except that’s an almost petulantly reductive delineation of “political.”

Look, I’m a Canadian citizen who isn’t a member of any party either. Would any sentient being call me “politically unbiased,” or indifferent to the outcome of the U.S. election?

Despite the reconstituted anti-Snopes backlash, examples of that site’s willingness to debunk anti-Trump goofiness aren’t hard to find. I’m just saying that the “facts” Snopes.com and their defenders offer up as proof of their neutrality boil down to “some pieces of government paper we’ve got over here somewhere.”

In other words: “Because we say so.”
