It’s like the Jewish VICE magazine:
It deteriorated in the manner of those time-lapse films of maggots eviscerating a mouse.
Look, this is great stuff — but notice that Paul Berman and his co-author (and the subject of their defense, Kamel Daoud) are doing the same thing they accuse others of doing.
They all feel obligated to add “They are right to worry about [right wing] anti-Muslim bigotries in the Western countries” — after listing all the things Muslims do that cause these “anti-Muslim” right-wing “bigotries” in the first place.
In condemning all those who reflexively (and, I’d add, to use their own jargon, colonialistically) scold Daoud for letting the left side down, they too are falling into the same right/left identity/cultural/tribal politics trap.
