On her last day at the Toronto Star before “taking early retirement” (cough), Antonia Zerbisias made a big splash with her Ghomeshi-quiddick-inspired hashtag, #BeenRapedNeverReported.
Return of Kings is not impressed:
Women seeking attention has never been a matter of surprise. But to seek it in this way is pure evil genius. The atrocities of the crime are such that the immediate feeling of those reading about it is sympathy. But when you go underneath the layers, you realize that these women have lived normal lives after being raped. By doing this, they’ve shown that they’re strong individuals.
Whatever it took to get past the rape and get on with life, they had it in them. They deserve respect for having the mental strength to rise above such a violation of their self without anyone’s help. They deserve respect because they probably acted as if nothing was wrong, even though their inner self would have been in turmoil. They deserve respect for having a normal relationship with another man, for enjoying sex with him. These are the things that rape victims deserve respect for.
Not for seeking attention on Twitter because of the rape. Nope, there’s no respect for that.
