5 Feet of Fury

The Last Picture Show: on TCM tomorrow

A very 1970s classic — bittersweet, poignant — and a rare American film that dares to make the U.S. look as dismal and hopeless as England…

It’s like the sequence of pictures revealing how fish caught around Key West have been shrinking over the decades – the same number of ships continue to go out, full of the same number of tourists eager to go fishing, and they all come back with something to show for it and pay as much now as then for this opportunity.

But is it really the same? As Loren McClenachan found out from analyzing 50 years worth of photos  prizewinning fish went from weighing about 44 pounds back in the fifties down to about five pounds (!) in more recent years.

When Norma Desmond in Sunset Blvd. (1950) says “It’s the pictures that got small” – she had no idea how much smaller they’d actually get.
