The question has baffled countless generations since the beginning of Black History Month way back in 1976: why is there no White History Month? To even ponder this enigma is to flirt with next-level dilemmas like why there’s no Whiteula, or Whitenstein, or why won’t anyone ever call us Mr. Tibbs?
Thankfully, Touré is up to the task, comparing the question to “fish not noticing water,” and quoting Chauncey de Vega of We Are Respectable Negroes comparing white angst over the month to “being a kid with all the toys in the world, and going to a birthday party and getting mad because another kid got a toy.”
Just so.
When conservatives “ask” “So, why is there no WHITE History Month, huh?” they are being just as bumpkinish as the “God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve” hicks who we should really spend more of our time trying to shake off.
What conservatives mean when they ask that about White History Month is “Why do we divide people into groups like this? Why don’t we just integrate ‘Black history’ and ‘women’s history’ and maybe even ‘gay history’ into the history curriculum?”
I guess that takes too long to say.
Blacks stubbornly cling to Black History Month even though they know it simply reinforces the unfortunate fact that there really isn’t enough “Black history” to fill out even 28 days, so a lot of it has to get made up.
Liberals like to make fun of conservatives for allegedly “voting against their own interests” but Black history months is one of those “accomplishments” that achieves the same result.
Conservatives cannot continue to insist that “tribe is everything” then get pissed when tribes assert their tribalism and impose it on the rest of us.
