I’m completely clear on the idea of crowdfunding and self-publishing.
More people should do it. Big Publishing and Big Media in general are b.s.
Adam Carolla had great (well deserved) success with his crowdfunding campaign.
However, after watching the video for Jenny Lens’ Clash book project at GoFundMe, I’m still missing something.
Why is the creation of this book so zero-sum, either/or?
Jenny has to choose between doing one particularly odd-sounding “straight” genre photography gig to earn a living or she can put out this book? Why not do both, and more?
How does someone with her credentials end up being on the verge of selling her archives?
Why aren’t any of the donation rewards a copy of the book itself?
Why not just say:
“I need $5000 to self-publish this book, which will include not only lots of already well-known photos but road stories from my days with The Clash, and an intro by The Baker? Donors at various levels will receive high quality prints, and if you give $XXX, you’ll get a free signed copy when the book comes out”?
I would love to see this book come into being. I hope she reaches her target.
I guess I would have done the campaign itself differently.
