People struggling to pay soaring heating bills should put on a jumper, the government suggested today.

Just 24 hours after British Gas became the latest energy firm to announce eye-watering price rises, Downing Street first confirmed and then later denied that David Cameron would expect hard-pressed households to ‘consider’ adding an extra layer of clothing to keep warm.

It triggered claims that the government was out of touch, with Labour leader Ed Miliband ridiculing Mr Cameron for changing policy ‘from “hug a hoodie” to “wear a hoodie”.
