Johnny Cash is really, clearly, obviously high in ‘Five Minutes to Live’ (1961)

September 28, 2013 By Kathy Shaidle

TCM broadcast this a few days ago and boy, was Cash terrible.

He’s speaking and moving very, VERY carefully like someone afraid his own unsteadiness will show and give him away.

And look at those eyes. Holy hell!

This ill-advised project is proof that charisma doesn’t always translate from one art form to another; look at how awful Mick Jagger is in movies, for instance.

What’s more interesting than Cash’s painful performance is that the screenplay was written by the female lead, and it’s actually pretty good. Some genuinely chilling moments but too many dumb ones.
