The attacks on Diana West and her new book (which I wrote about here) continue to confuse me.
As I’ve said from the start, I don’t feel we can ever know what really went on in America, or anywhere else, in the 20th century; another new book, the aptly titled Disinformation, makes that clear, in case there were any remaining doubts. (And of course, you can’t trust what’s in THAT book, either…)
It isn’t even a question of evidence; note that the most photographed murder in history remains one of the most highly contested.
West’s conclusions are somewhat radical and I’m temperamentally reluctant to swallow them whole.
However, her critics are acting like she’s written Chariots of the Communists — a flaky “Ancient Aliens” take on American history.
The attacks are deeply, weirdly overheated, and personal, too. (Although no one has yet dared to play the “…And she’s ugly!” card — because that would go nowhere fast for obvious reasons– but it wouldn’t surprise me if someone did eventually.)
I normally refrain from getting involved in these internecine battles.
