‘[M]y black friends are socially conservative and politically liberal’

Kennedy writes:

Once, when Ken and I were bullshitting at work (we worked as crew on a TV show), a teenage black dude came in the door and hung out by the back of the studio. Every black crew member went up and chatted with him and hugged him or shook his hand. I figured the dude was famous.

I asked Ken who he was and he said, “Never seen him before. I guess an intern?” Then I asked why everyone went up and greeted him. He told me, “I don’t know.” When I asked him if he would have done that if the intern was white, he said “no.” He then explained to me that being black is almost the most important thing in the world for him.
