1990: ‘Most black Detroiters do not measure their lives, or their city, by the yardsticks of the American middle class’

July 28, 2013 By Kathy Shaidle

[Mayor Coleman Young — the first black mayor of Detroit; elected in 1973] Young may not have provided them with the safest streets or most efficient services; nor has he been able to raise their standard of living. But he has given his constituents something even more valuable: a feeling of empowerment and personal worth.

We all don’t “want the same things.”

We all don’t “love our children, too”.

Professional “conservatives” and libertarians refuse to accept this.

More on the re-release of Zev Chafit’s 1990 book about Detroit after Rush Limbaugh started touting it on his program:

And it’s his contention that Detroit’s core problem isn’t liberalism or unions or the decline of the auto industry. Those are factors, but he said it’s race that led to Detroit’s current problems, including bankruptcy. And his book makes the case for it, and it’s quite an in-depth review of the mayoralty of Coleman Young.
