‘The Earrings of Madame de…’ (1953) left me cold

December 15, 2012 By Kathy Shaidle

Another day, another “all time great” French movie that didn’t live up to my expectations.

Had my expectations been lower, I may have been far more impressed. There certainly is a lot to admire here.

But I couldn’t help comparing it to …Colonel Blimp, another sweeping tale of social expectations and lost love — it even has a military setting and a “menage a trois” of sorts. Earrings… can’t compare.
