After spending the first third of the article talking about how smart he and his friend are — they went to Harvard, you know — he acknowledges again and again and again and again that his friend made a series of stupid decisions and is now (literally) paying the price.
And yet, we are still meant to feel sorry for him or something, and therefore need to keep Obamacare, or something.
Dear privileged white male able bodied Harvard grad Nick Kristoff who gets to write for the New York Times and I don’t:
My already tiny reservoir of “compassion” gets siphoned off in the direction of my family and friends.
Ordinary, non-privileged Americans can’t. Afford. To. Pay. For. A. Rich. Stranger’s. Foolish. Mistakes.
And while most of them are too polite and decent to say so out loud, they also don’t FEEL like it!
AND they shouldn’t feel obliged to feel guilty about that, just because you write some heart tugging article in the great and wonderful NYT about your dying friend and show a picture of him in a hospital gown (thanks for THAT image btw.)
Why don’t you, the well-paid and well-connected Nick Kristoff, pay for your friend’s treatment and/or hold a giant fundraiser that could be promoted and title-sponsored by the goddamn NYT (who might even be relied upon to cough up a few thousand bucks.)
Because that’s what this guy thought to do for his friend and he DIDN’T GO TO FUCKING HARVARD and doesn’t WORK FOR THE FUCKING NEW YORK TIMES!
(He raised $200,000 in one night. Surely you and your much smarter Harvard pals could do better, no? Because he’s just a right wing sexist racist moron.)
PS: Can readers tell me if Harvard Alumni automatically get access to decent, affordable insurance?
