I always liked Noam Chomsky’s crack to me when Christopher [Hitchens] announced in Grand Street that he was a Jew: “From anti-Semite to self-hating Jew, all in one day.”)
***
I’m no expert on Hitchens, but I’m racking my brain for examples of his a) “anti-Semitism and b) “self-hatred,” Jewish or otherwise.
The “all in one day” is a cutesy, rhythmic piece of hyperbole that simple makes it all worse.
Is everything Chomsky utters like this?
That is: Clever sounding but factually suspect upon a few seconds’ closer inspection?
