Uncracked code: ‘The Buddy Holly Story’ (1978)

July 30, 2012 By Kathy Shaidle

Josh Olsen wishes he knew how the makers of the movie pulled it off: Buddy Holly was a genius, but his life was conventional and uneventful (until the very last night.)

Not much of a “story,” in other words.

So how did they turn that unpromising material into such a great film?

Olsen doesn’t know, and maybe it’s just as well; there’s something of a fairytale curse to this movie, as the director and the star never achieved such success again.
