People love to read about rape + murder and pretend they’re ‘concerned’

It gives them a little frisson of excitement in their boring lives, as well as the false sense that they are morally superior, when in fact their excitement proves that the difference between the perps and newspaper readers is slim.

If the “gory details” of the Stafford case “trouble” you, do what almost every man and woman I know did during the Bernardo/Homalka trials: avoid the stories. There’s no reason for you to know this stuff unless you are on the jury. It isn’t Watergate.
