5 Feet of Fury

As I was saying…

Mark Steyn’s annoyance is barely contained:

It has been somewhat dispiriting to see so many of my colleagues apparently sideswiped by what ought to have been stark staring obvious.

Yeah, crazy that.

But when you’re part of the Conservative Media Establishment(tm), more interested in personal-fifedom-preservation and cocktail party invites and opportunities to rub up against the hirsute objects of your affection (preferably on a comfortable cruise ship), you never want to think or say anything TOO “out there.”

Then you’d be just like that “crazy” Glenn Beck guy… who, er, bought gold at $400 and, come to think of it, throws his own damn parties (sans cocktails, but still…)

Steyn is responding to a NRO comment by one Michael Walsh, who I’m going to have to get to know better:

Except for the Ten Commandments, laws are made by men, not men by laws. The implicit fascism of the Obamacare law needs to be civilly resisted and legislatively overturned, not piecemeal but wholesale, the way slavery and Prohibition were; just for laughs, if you want to see widespread civil disobedience in action — against a Constitutional amendment, no less — check out the years 1920–1933.

Exactly.

People have been cowed into thinking that “civil disobedience” is the exclusive domain of a) the Left and b) “saints”/fakirs like King and Gandhi.

But everyone who bought a drink during Prohibition was committing civil disobedience.

So was every couple who lived together despite local laws to the contrary, and gay men who had anal sex before the Supreme Court deigned to give them permission to do so in Lawrence v Texas.

I like to think there will be a mass Frisbee throwing festival on California beaches in the near future, too, but America isn’t America anymore so I guess that’s too much to ask.

How can I go to New York City on the anniversary of 9/11 and apparently be one of the only people crying and visibly angry and willing to physically confront assholes?

“Not showing up to riot is a failed conservative policy.”

If you’re getting sick of hearing me say this — see my old “Donkey in the Bathtub” thing at the Western Standard — imagine how I feel.
