‘Best Worst Movie’ (2009)

February 1, 2012 By Kathy Shaidle

Fun documentary about the 20-years-later cult following that’s developed around Troll 2 — one that was beneath my radar until recently.

In Best Worst Movie, a case is made (subtly) that the assembled hipsters love Troll 2 in part because (although they might not admit it) it’s a sincere, un-cynical movie about an old fashioned (white, middle class, nuclear) family that comes together when threatened by, er, OK, goblins.

And anthropologists and historians of the future, searching for a “typical late 20th century American,” would do worse than pick George Hardy.

“The rich man’s Craig T. Nelson,” he really is THE most “American” person I’ve “encountered” in some time.

People like that simply don’t exist in other countries.

I wish de Tocqueville was here to meet him.
