Wow, P.J. O’Rourke’s book ‘Don’t Vote…’ is really awful

January 25, 2012 By Kathy Shaidle

I picked it up when I went shopping with a $100 Amazon gift cardamazon gift card I got from a client for Christmas.

Do NOT repeat my mistake.

Leaden “jokes.” Strained metaphors. Sentences you have to read three times to understand (and even then…)

And how much of it is just plain wrong?

On page 21, he defends government redistribution of wealth (!) by noting that “U.S. charitable contributions in 2008” were “$307,700,000.”

Three hundred million dollars.

If that seems absurdly low to you, that’s because he obviously meant to write “billion,” since you can’t tell me that figure went from million to billion in three years.

Someone warned me that O’Rourke hadn’t been funny since his divorce. But he keeps mentioning his (second) wife in this book (and sounds totally pussy whipped, btw). So I can’t “do the math” on that claim.

What a disappointment. Ann Coulter’s Demonic is far superior, but she’ll never get the respect from conservatives that O’Rourke is granted based on some stuff he said fifteen years ago.
