This appears to be what they were paid to do by their foreign backers. The Seattle-based foundation started by software billionaire James Letwin paid Dogwood $25,000 to run a campaign against the “threat” of the Enbridge pipeline to the B.C. coast.
Clearly the most efficient way to block this pipeline is to make sure it never gets approved — by swamping the approval process with an army of activists.
Dogwood took $30,000 from a foreign foundation in 2009 “to mobilize urban voters for a federal ban on coastal tankers.”
Yet another foreign backer paid Dogwood to “to help grow public opposition to counter the Enbridge pipeline construction…”

Stephen Harper was roundly condemned for accusing anti-pipeline activists (and their foreign funders) of “hijacking” the Northern Gateway pipeline hearings.
I followed the crazed reaction on Twitter; that word drove the left over the edge.
Now, also via Twitter, I’ve discovered a blog post from October 2011, about a guy named Eric Swanson bragging about his plan to, as he calls it, “mob the mic” at the hearings.
(Oh, and they’re selling T-shirts at $26 a pop!
(Which are printed in the USA on shirts made by American Apparel, which may be “sweatshop free” (in a non-union shop) but is run by a creepy man who masturbates in public and started out as a “scab”, and uses ads most feminists would find offensive.)

I guess these old Baby Boomers with Mob the Mic are what you call “community organizers”…
Over the course of about 30 days, over 4,000 people registered to make oral statements to the Enbridge Joint Review Panel. Our ‘Mob the Mic’ action accounted for about 1,600 of those!
Some people signed up as individuals, others joined one of Mob the Mic’s 150 teams.
