OK, I’ll say it: I wasn’t that thrilled by Allen West’s CPAC speech. Sorry.

February 14, 2011 By Kathy Shaidle

As I’ve written before, I’ve met Allen West a couple of times. He’s a very impressive guy who’d make as good a First Black President as anybody.

That said, I wasn’t blown away by his CPAC keynote.

Way too many cliches. Folks, you know the real way evil’s gonna triumph? If we keep repeating that goddamn quotation over and over again!

On substance, he lost me on Obamacare: wait, “we all go along with” leaving 26 year old “children” on their parents policies, and support stuff for “pre-existing conditions”? That’s news to me.

Plus I’m not thrilled by his apparent enthusiasm — you guessed it — a local pork project. (I learned about that going in, so it’s not like I was so excited about West’s speech that it was bound to be a let down. Quite the opposite: I was suddenly skeptical and hoping he’d redeem himself.)

So: a much-needed reminder not to “place our hope in princes.”
