5 Feet of Fury

‘The Creation of the Humanoids’ (1962)

I tivo’d this off AMC and watched it last night. I’ve seen worse. (AMC needs to get a better “print” though — theirs was covered in debris. Some people think that adds to a movie’s “retro feel” but that’s corny. No movie starts out being “retro” — those blemishes don’t belong there.)

Basically, it’s I, Robot if they filmed it after hours on the sets of Bewitched. The movie looks far tackier than the ideas it is toying with. It’s a surprise to see such (mostly) good writing paired with such weirdass production values.

If Creation of the Humanoids really was “Andy Warhol’s favorite film” well… there you go. I’ll have to ponder that a little more.

I was shocked to see Jack Pierce‘s name on the credits as makeup artist but yeah, you can see his workmanship here even considering his age and the budget he had to work with.

Also, you’ll recognize Z-movie stalwart Dudley Manlove‘s (Plan 9 From Outer Space — “Your stupid minds!! Stupid, stupid minds!!”) trademark voice; he’s one of the head robots.

Honestly not that bad:
