‘It’s hard to envisage a St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre in contemporary New York’

August 25, 2010 By admin

George Jonas writes:

…though false, mocking or merely premature gestures of convergence, like proposing to build a mosque near Ground Zero, could trigger one.

The original massacre in 1572 followed such an ostensibly “ecumenical” gesture: The marriage of the Protestant prince, Henry of Navarre, to the Catholic princess, Margaret of Valois.

The marriage was designed to cement the peace between Catholics and Protestants in France.

It seemed like a good idea at the time.
