The obnoxious and increasingly desperate Southern Poverty Law Center (which as been raking in millions in donations by predicting an armed skinhead rebellion against the US government since, er, 1989).
The SPLC’s latest brainstorm? They’ve issued a new report naming the 35 rightwingers they feel are the biggest threat to (elite liberal) America today.
They’ve called this report… “Meet the Patriots.”
Nope, not “Meet the Domestic Terrorists” or “Meet the Traitors.”
No, the SPLC brain trust chose to describe their ideological enemies as “patriots” — so they must believe that was a totally sound and ingenious decision on their part.
The report is full of stuff like this –weasel wording posing as “responsible journalistic subjectivity”:
Broughton made headlines in August 2009 when he showed up outside an Obama rally in Phoenix with an AR-15 assault rifle slung over his shoulder and a pistol holstered on his waist, becoming a hero to many in the “Patrtiot” movement in the process. He said he carries his guns habitually. (…)
He claims that some news broadcasters edited video footage of the scene to hide his race (he’s black) when reporting on the racist backlash to Obama’s election. Presumably, he felt that was part of an effort to paint Obama’s critics as racist.
Yeah, he “claims” that because that actually happened, as anyone can see with their own (lying?) eyes:
In a typical excerpt, readers are informed in similar faux journalese that one “inductee,” WND publisher Joseph Farah “could not be reached for comment.”
Farah was pleased to find himself on the list, and “commented” after the fact:
Could not be reached for comment? Let me state unequivocally and for the record, the gutless, little cowards at the Southern Poverty Law Center with their $300 million annual budget never had the courage to call me, leave a message or send an e-mail! I would have been amused to answer the accusations of [SPLC Founder Morris] Dees or one of his little minions.
Anyone who knows me understands how much I like to mix it up with those who disagree with me. “Could not be reached for comment,” indeed. Larceny and cowardice are the trademarks of Dees and company.
And, just for the record, though I have spoken and written hundreds of thousands of words about Barack Obama’s failure to prove his eligibility, I have never said or written that he “was not born in Hawaii, but in Africa.” What I have said is ever so simple: Obama has not proven he was born in the United States and a natural born citizen. It’s amazing to me with all I write – six columns a week, more than a dozen books, thousands of hours of broadcast time – that people still feel compelled to put words in my mouth!

The question is: how much longer can they keep it up, now that we’re not only on to them, but in some cases possess a reach and influence that surpasses their own?
