Canadian ‘conservative’ politician sounds… conservative in recent speech

Brian Lilley reports:

In a speech that Andrew Coyne of Maclean’s compares to Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the door at Wittenberg, Bernier makes a defence of fiscal conservatism that is distinctly at odds with the government he has been part of.

Bernier says government has grown far too big, but rather than advocating cuts now, he says the size of government should be clawed back by refusing to allow it to grow any further. (…)

Often conservatives promise to cut and then don’t, promise to rein in spending and then don’t. Often times they simply promise to be better managers of government, a notion Bernier dismisses.
