Matthew Shepard: not dead enough?

From our Never Hear The End of It files…

A bill to expand federal hate-crime statutes to include protections for homosexuals passed the House last week and could pass in the Senate this week. President Barack Obama has said he would sign the bill into law — a landmark achievement for the gay community but a dividing line for some religious groups.

My freedom of speech is more important than making someone’s mother feel better about herself.

So is holding fast to the idea that all men are created equal; one victim group member’s death isn’t more serious than anyone else’s.

Sometimes people really do die in vain. It’s horrible, it’s tragic, and it’s life. Real life, not the TV movie someone thinks their life should be.

PS: I don’t want to look at those ugly makeshift memorials on the side of the road, either. Not only do they likely cause other accidents because they’re distractions, but I resent the implications that I’m supposed to care about a total stranger’s accidental death.

Please stop intruding into my life with your private personal tragedies. I don’t care.

Neither do most people, but they don’t have the guts to say it.
