Wed. a.m. UPDATE: found him. Oh, so “devout”.

Tuesday a.m. UPDATE:

a reader emails that one of the kidnapped “devout” Muslim engineering students (what else?) was recently charged with “theft under $5000”:

The criminal charges stem from work he did for computer giant IBM Canada, headquartered in Markham, a town north of Toronto.

On Aug. 13, he was charged with theft under $5,000 after allegedly being found in possession of a green plastic recycling bin filled with hard drives and other computer equipment belonging to IBM, Constable Marina Orlovski of York Regional Police confirmed. He was released on an undertaking, his next court date set for Sept. 15.

The alleged theft is not the only loss IBM has sustained in recent weeks: A much larger haul of computer gear went missing earlier this month. It was unclear, however, whether the two sets of circumstances are connected.

No one is more perturbed by events than Mohamed Mobeen, the mosque’s secretary and fund-raising chair, who last year accompanied the missing man, together with his mother and one of his brothers, on the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, a journey all Muslims are expected to take at least once in their lives.

Mr. Mobeen described Mr. Muhammad-Haroon’s conduct and morals as exemplary.

“He is deeply spiritual … Furqan and his (older) brother Hassan were extremely helpful, especially with the older pilgrims,” he recounted.

Other friends and acquaintances paint a similar picture. Few, it seems, were aware of Mr. Muhammed-Haroon’s recent run-in with the law.
