Why is the government paying people for dying anyhow?

This is a horrible but not surprising story, coming from the hell hole formerly known as Great Britain, which should just be nuked.

But why do British families get checks from the government with their loved ones are murdered anyway? That’s what private life insurance and personal fundraisers are for.

I never understood why the government gave money to 9/11 widows either, unless their were the wives of cops, firemen or otherwise on the public payroll. Those whose spouses worked for private firms in the towers deserved any private/company benefits they were due, but why the State was obliged to cut them checks is beyond me.
