And when I say “phony”, I just mean it in the Caulfieldian sense (with UPDATE)

March 4, 2009 By admin

Uh, Rod, why are you taking the disgusting “hero” of the Most Overrated American Novel of the Late 20th Century as your excuse/model for appropriate vocabulary words?

Bezoomny, chelloveck!

PLUS:

UPDATE: Are you freaking kidding me, Rod?  When you screw up this badly, the thing to do is to own it, apologize and move on.  The single DUMBEST course of action you can possibly take is to edit the evidence, claim that you were misinterpreted and work in that incredibly lame “Some of my best friends are…” line.

I think people are piling on Rod somewhat unfairly here — after all,I purposely say “retarded” all the time. But I just say it because I feel like it. It amuses me, and ticks off all the right people. I don’t quote crappy lit-er-a-ture to excuse it, and I expect to get all those treacly, TV-Movie-Of-The-Week “my neice has Down Syndrome and just won a big prize at school sniff/how dare you insult Trig Palin” not-getting-it victimhood emails.

I just say what I say. Without apologies. Without obtuse (to many) psuedo-Catholic literary references.

Rod has inadvertently proven with that post that there are “highbrows” who “get things” (him) and, by his lights, tedious, knuckledragging “lowbrows” who don’t (his legions of angry commenters.) And that the “class” thing he wants everyone to shut up, just SHUT UP, about, is very very real indeed.

(Whole) Food(s) for thought?
