The overwhelming response I received for this off-the-cuff request simply proves what I’ve been saying all along: this is how normal people talk, and the Human Rights Commissions are trying to impose their elitist, abnormal vocabularies upon the rest of us by force of law.
* We used to refer to our favourite weekend camping area as “Hangover” (Hanover) ON, during my somewhat miss-spent youth. Keep up the good work, by the way.

* In NYC the Flushing bound 7 train heads east from Manhattan to Flushing, the Valley of Ashes in The Great Gatsby and now a burgeoning Chinatown. Locals call the train the Orient Express. Hillary Clinton, when running for Senate, was the head of some federal nonprofit boondoggle that was responsible for citing the country’s heritage trails: think pioneers on the Oregon Trail, or the Chisholm. What did Hill call the 7 train? The Immigrant Trail, because so many of our proud city’s immigrants ride it. And after election? The International Express. This use is also sanctioned by no less an authority of things not in Manhattan than the New York Times.
* A group of white friends used to live in an old funeral home one of them had inherited in Fort Greene, a decidedly African-American and Afro-Caribbean neighborhood (they are NOT the same, as any immigrant granny from Jamaica will tell you). When they all lived there they were the only whites for miles around, so we all called their home Rhodesia House.
* The other day I painted the rims of my “new” $300 Hyundai Pony before putting snow tires on them. Tremclad grey primer with shiny Tremclad Aluminum paint on top. It was the greyest topcoat they had (to match the car).
Apparently people out here call shiny metallic paint “Hindu Chrome”. I’m told I’d have to visit Surrey to know why.

* Kathy, when i worked the garbage trucks in Toronto (North York in particular..), when we got above certain streets we referred to the area as ‘upper Nigeria’, as you would not see a white face for blocks. We would be pelted with rocks and bottles, watched women pee into sewer grates and once watched a river of blood run down a driveway from a closed garage..i saw noooothink!! as Schultz would say..
