PLUS: Dalyrimple on the extinct British stiff upper lip, which I’m not convinced is an entirely bad thing. I’ve written before, to the annoyance of some, that the legendary British “bravery” during the Blitz was more like simple stoicism, which at base is a kind of cynical laziness and complacency. Ideal during wartime, not always helpful in peace.
