Canadian Muslim woman writes about the “controversial” Toronto Life cover story about an honor killing:
In my experience of having been born and brought up in a Muslim Indo-Pak family, I can say that everything I read was generally true. Unfortunately, the Muslim Indo-Pak community, which is primarily made up of immigrants, who refuse to integrate in Canadian society and adopt a liberal and open outlook in life, justify acts of violence against women and domestic violence as their ‘given male right’ through the use of religion. However, the truth is that these men are just looking for power and control. They use ‘Islam’ to justify their actions, when in reality, ‘Islam’ doesn’t have anything to do with their actions and ‘culture’ has everything to do with their actions. The suppression of women is all cultural and not religious. Ideas such as the ‘hijab’ which was forced on Aqsa Parvez, holds a cultural bearing rather than a religious one. The integration of culture with religion has caused a lot of confusion within ‘Islam’.
Gee, I wonder why they are so “confused”:
Muhammad’s assessment of [women’s] deficiencies comes from his Qur’an, as he explains further: “Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man? [cf. Qur’an 2:282, above]…This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?…This is the deficiency in her religion” (Bukhari 1.6.301). The idea that hell will be filled with more women than men occurs frequently in the hadith. According to Muhammad, “I looked at Paradise and saw that the majority of its residents were the poor; and I looked at the (Hell) Fire and saw that the majority of its residents were women” (Bukhari 7.62.126).
