The last day of the Marc Lemire hearing:
An intervenor who supports Mr. Lemire – Paul Fromm – told Mr. Hadjis that virtually all of those targeted in Section 13 complaints have been modestly educated, “lower-class” individuals who tended to phrase objections to immigrants or particular groups in crude, hyperbolic “bar talk.”
“Not everyone can speak like an Osgoode Hall-educated lawyer, with nuances and exceptions, and so on,” Mr. Fromm said.
Precisely.
As lawyers take over the internet, only a certain level of discourse is deemed acceptable. People like me, from lower class backgrounds, where blunt talk about the obvious, undeniable differences between ethnic groups is commonplace, are increasingly pressured to adopt a phony baloney way of writing in order to be considered acceptable.
This is true on the right as well as the left. Too many Canadian “conservative” bloggers are aspirational little careerist party hacks, eager to join the elites and adopt their Trudeaupian worldview. There boring “on the one hand, on the other hand” is sucking the life out of this place.
Hey look, here’s a lawyer (and Presidential candidate!) now:
The one thing that I want to insist on is that, as I travel around the country, the American people are a decent people. Now they get confused sometimes. You know, they listen to the wrong talk radio shows or watch the wrong TV networks, um, but they’re, they’re basically decent, they’re basically sound.
Here’s his running mate, also a lawyer:
All this stuff about how different Barack Obama is, they’re not just used to somebody really smart. They’re just not used to somebody who’s really well educated. They just don’t know quite how to handle it. Cause if he’s as smart as Barack is he must not be from my neighborhood.
