“...nobody, but NOBODY of any consequence on the right defends Fred Phelps’ opinions in any way, shape, form or manner. Even when we acknowledge his right to free speech, we take care to denounce his views because they are simply abhorrent. They are despicable even to people who don’t want to see gay marriage legalized.
“Imagine, if you will, any Republican candidate attending Westboro Baptist for a couple of decades, and then pleading ignorance and weakly disavowing Phelps’ views. Imagine conservative pundits and bloggers trying to defend such a person. How quickly would that guy be run out of politics?
