5 Feet of Fury

A letter to MP Keith Martin

“Dear Dr. Martin,

“I felt obliged to write and thank you for introducing your motion (M-446) to delete portions of the Human Rights Code that are patently offensive to the ideals of Canadians and Canada. To have such poorly drafted legislation used for such an abhorrent purpose as stifling free speech and opinion under threat of an execrable and ruinous legal process is indeed an offense against the values that we should all hold dear. I have heard you described as courageous for taking this stand (especially as it puts you into conflict with your party leader), but l choose to believe that you are simply doing what you feel is right and honourable. In truth, the silence that much of the media and your government colleagues have chosen to hide behind speaks more to their cowardice and you stand out in stark relief against such a background of complicity.

“Thank you sir for having the decency and moral fiber to stand up and add your considerable influence and rational voice to this cause. Whether or not your motion is acted upon in anything approaching a timely manner, you have at least lit a candle to shed some light on this issue and if we are indeed worthy of the freedoms we take for granted, the light (and clamor) will continue to grow.

“Sincerely,

“John H.”
