Canadian Muslim women tell PM: listen to other voices

“Two Muslim women academics, writing in the wake of the murder of 16-year old Pakistani-Canadian girl Aqsa Parvez by her father for not wearing the hijab, have urged all levels of government in Canada to abandon their habit of listening only to the most conservative voices within the large Muslim population.

“Haideh Moghissi, professor of sociology and women’s study at York University, Toronto, and Shahrzad Mojab, professor and director of Women and Gender Studies Institute, University of Toronto, argue in the online ZNet Magazine that family could be, and often is the site of most serious repression, and violation of rights in this ‘private’ domain often occurs with the active participation of mothers.”
