Magazine apologizes, averts HRC complaint

The Western Standard’s new owner called the troublemaking Calgary imam and apologized, which comes as a surprise since only days ago they sounded defiant.

The trouble here, as with the FreeDominion case, are anonymous commenters acting like parasites on other people’s websites. People still don’t understand why this blog doesn’t allow comments, and actually get quite huffy about it. (I’d remind “dmorris” that visiting restaurants occasionally does not oblige one to open one of your own…)

The Western Standard says it is revamping its Shotgun blog to try to undo its reputation as a sewer (as one sometime fellow contributor described it to me). When I do post there, I turn off the comments. Otherwise the He Man Woman Hater’s Club starts speculating about my menstrual cycle…

It’s a shame that the Standard decided to apologize to this known pest (is he even a citizen of this country?) especially since it is quite impossible to apologize for another person’s actions.

Here we see the difference between shame-based and honor-based cultures at work — the imam and other Muslims will view this magnanimous gesture as a sign of weakness and more complaints will follow, each one even stupider than the last.
