I was only eight years old when it happened, but even I know that Wallace was paralyzed, not killed, by would-be assassin Arthur Bremmer. Didn’t even have to look all that up.
But do I have a column in the Wall Street Journal? No I do not.
The story was retold all last week due to Bremmer’s release from prison. I guess Henninger was too busy deputy editing to notice. A shame: his article expresses many admirable anti-hippie sentiments, albeit without much flair.
UPDATE: a reader writes:
In today’s hard copy of the Wall St. Journal, Daniel Henninger says that George Wallace was shot *and wounded* in 1972, which was correct. Since this was presumably set in type before the online version came out, I can’t imagine why it was changed to ‘killed’ later on. The fault may not be Henninger’s but that of an officious editor.
