Rachel Marsden’s side of the story:
“Last week, in my weekly Sun Media column, I argued that it’s really not that big of a deal to make terror suspects like 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed essentially do what any kid does at Halloween when he bobs for apples — except in the presence of the CIA, and with the prize in the terrorist’s case being lifesaving information.
“That column triggered an email campaign spearheaded by the Daily Kos–the largest far-left blog in America — which appealed to the Sun’s new editor-in-chief from the Toronto Star, Canada’s largest leftist newspaper. As a result, after 2 years with the Sun and a hundred columns, my writing is now in search of a new home.”
My source, however, says she’s been let go because she’s, among other things, considered too high maintenance and too extreme to be in print.
I’m not 100% convinced that anyone at the Sun gives a rat’s pattootie about the Daily Kos and its bonkers minions. Other columnists, at all papers, get death threats, nasty emails and lawsuits but they’re still employed.
I actually agree with a lot of what Marsden has to say in her columns (although naturally I think I say it better). And I didn’t spend my 20s in a convent, and have never been and never will be anybody’s poster girl for mental health. I’ve gotten second and third and fourth chances, thank God.
(So have lots of people: I’m typing this with Glenn Beck in the background — the self-described “Mormon recovering alcoholic ex-rodeo clown” who just signed a $50-million deal and got voted America’s 18th most influential conservative. Note that Beck attributes his success to being “too stupid to self-edit…”)
But there is something awfully troubling going on with Marsden’s particular career trajectory. Something kind of “Britney Spears-y” that inclines me to lay off rather than pile on. At least for today.
UPDATE: OK, “today” ended and I wrote another post. Question: Marsden’s been fired many times before — please explain how Kos played a role then…
